Our guide, Joseph, was wonderful! On our way up Mt. Etna he told us a lot of the history. We made several stops informing us what year that eruption occurred and showed us how it was different. Gambino winery was fantastic! We tried 7 different wines along with a wide variety of delicious food. Our guide gave us a 5 star tour! My only issue was how strict their refund policy was. My grandson woke up sick that morning so instead of exposing him to the driver and having the driver listen to him cry a lot, my daughter stayed home with him. I let them know before 8 am, we were getting picked up at 8:30. I received a response later that day saying they would not refund the money because they did not have the time to switch to a smaller vehicle. I know that their policy is 24 hours but I feel they should make exceptions for illness. It is a wonderful tour but if you feel sick that morning, go anyway since you won’t get a refund.

We have used Viator for all of our tours this trip and most have been excellent thus far. This was not one of them. We didn’t experience Mount Etna or the winery. The very first thing Joseph said to us was that it is impossible to do this tour (6 hours). The tour operator never communicated to us that we could not do the tour in 6 hours. We did communicate to the operator we had 6 hours for the tour and would shorten stops, if needed. We then suggested doing only the winery and again was told it was impossible, the lunch wasn’t worth it and we should go to Taormina and drive by the winery on the return. We had no interest walking through the streets of a beautiful small town with 1,000 other people. It wasn’t part of our tour unless time permitted and it wasn’t what we paid to see. Additionally, in comparison to our other tour guides, Joseph was basically a taxi driver from Siracusa to Taormina and back and for which we overpaid by a few hundred dollars. Extremely disappointing!

It was ok on the whole but we felt that the guide didn’t share that much history or facts if the volcano or winery. We didn’t get to go to the honey farm cos he said it was crowded. When we went to teh fester, he just waited for us at the shop. At the winery he did the same.
Wine was awesome but food was really quite pathetic. Few pieces of cheese, ham, Cous Cous and 1 sausage. I paid almost SG600 for 2 person for this tour.

Very professional driver and knowledgeable guide, Mercedes van , unfortunately, we had one of those days where it rained all day and rain very hard when we were on the top of the mountain. It was too wet to get out and hike, or go further up the mountain ,weather improved when we got to the winery. Beautiful building and setting, knowledge hosts, beautiful food that was unfortunately too salty.

A great combination of sightseeing around Mount Etna and tasting the wines of the region. We really enjoyed the private tour with our guide Ricardo, who was very knowledgeable of the area. We learned a lot. The tasting at the Gambino winery was wonderful! Whether you are staying in Catania or Taormina, it is worth the time spent on the tour. Prepare for the weather and some windy roads up the mountain.

Communication is key between a tour operator and their clients to say that this operator is incapable of communication pretty much sums it up. We contacted the tour operator the day before departure to confirm our address and ask when we could expect them to arrive to collect us. There was no response. The booking showed a pickup window of between 8-14:00….quite the window. A little after 8 I sent a whatsapp message to Viator asking for help. With no immediate reply (reply came via that method after about a half hour) I called the 800 customer service line. They did answer and called the tour operator on our behalf. The guide was on the way….great!
The guide explained he was filling in for someone….fine.
The tour was going well and we made several stops to view Etna in all its splendor. When we stopped for lunch at Gambino Winery (which their lunch paired with wine was the highlight of the trip) our guide announced he was leaving us and someone else (not introduced) would take us back to our apartment in Taormina. We were stunned….why was this not communicated upfront? We had no idea who our new guide would be and we were plotting that we would have to ask the winery to call us a taxi. At the end of the lunch and tour of the winery, a gentleman came up and introduced himself as our new driver.
The day itself was a 5 star event but their lack of simple communication calls for a downgrade.
We have used Viator for years and done dozens of tours with their service. This is the first time we have experienced this type of event.
