Marine stingers can occur in Tropical North Queensland waters, particularly during the warmer months.
Visitors should swim in designated areas, follow local safety advice and wear protective stinger suits when recommended.
Getting to Port Douglas
Port Douglas is located just under an hour north of Cairns by road.
The journey follows the scenic Great Barrier Reef Drive, which provides views of the Coral Sea and rainforest-covered mountains.
The closest major airport is Cairns Airport.
Airport shuttle services, private transfers and rental cars are available between Cairns and Port Douglas.
Getting Around Port Douglas

How Long Should You Spend in Port Douglas?
A stay of 3 to 5 days provides enough time to enjoy Port Douglas itself while adding a Great Barrier Reef excursion and a Daintree Rainforest day trip.
A stay of around a week allows more time for beaches, reef trips, Mossman Gorge, Cape Tribulation and relaxing around town.

Travel Tip
Port Douglas works particularly well as a base if you want to experience both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest without changing accommodation.
