Hainan Island Guide: Sanya Beaches, Haikou Old Streets, Rainforests, Wanning Surf and Lingshui Resorts

Hainan Island is China’s tropical island province, known for warm weather, palm-lined beaches, rainforest mountains, seafood, hot springs, surf bays, resort towns, Li and Miao ethnic culture, duty-free shopping and coastal road trips. Sitting in the South China Sea, Hainan offers a very different travel experience from Beijing, Shanghai or inland China. It feels more relaxed, tropical and beach-focused, with Sanya, Haikou, Lingshui, Wanning and Wuzhishan all offering different sides of the island.

For many travellers, Hainan means Sanya: beach resorts, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay, Dadonghai, Tianya Haijiao and Wuzhizhou Island. But the island has much more than Sanya. Haikou has historic arcade streets and a local city feel. Wanning is known for surf culture, Riyue Bay and Shimei Bay. Lingshui has quieter resort coastlines such as Xiangshui Bay and Clearwater Bay. Inland Hainan brings rainforest scenery, hot springs, waterfalls, mountain roads and Li ethnic villages.

Hainan is best enjoyed slowly. A good trip combines beach time, island food, coastal scenery, rainforest exploration and at least one quieter area outside Sanya. It can work as a family resort holiday, romantic escape, surf trip, winter-sun break, cultural route or tropical road trip.
