I found the One Day in Africa bicycle tour in Soweto fantastic. My tour guide was Tinyiko, he made me feel very safe and at home in Soweto. We roamed around many sights in Soweto. I am sure that on bicycle you get much better understanding of Soweto that you cannot get on a tour bus. We chatted about three hours about all imaginable topics. The route is manageable for most people, there are some uphill stretches and also downhill but nothing serious. The bicycles are in top notch condition, the same guys also run a bike shop. The lunch was great and the beer tasting, too 😊. The tour by Book Ibhoni is probably one of the best ways to experience Soweto. These guys started the business recently but are still one of the only ones organizing bike tours. Very highly recommended.

    Cool Tour!
From what I could see online, as of now, they are the only biking tour in Soweto, so that was a cool experience and it beat walking for hours in the hot sun. I was able to see all of the major highlights of Soweto including the local brewery and local food (which I didn’t eat because I was full already). My tour guide, Dumisani, was new but he did a good job.
All in all, I would recommend this tour especially if you like riding bikes.

A great tour of Soweto. Our guide Dumisani was top notch. Super professional, incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable. We had a great time getting to know the history of Soweto and getting to know Dumi as well. His insight is great as he grew up in and still lives in the area. He made sure we were comfortable and happy at all times and managed to squeeze us in a stop at Soweto Brewing Co once he learned we love craft beer. He was sure to keep us on schedule but never made the tour feel rushed. We learned a lot riding through Soweto and we really enjoyed the experience. The history here is important and sad but the ongoing injustice really needs more exposure as well. The people of Soweto are resilient and inspiring. A tour we will not soon forget.
And on a lighter note, the kota sandwiches Dumi grabbed us for lunch were delicious! It was great to get to try some local food. I learned early on in the tour that Dumi is vegetarian like me (though he must be the only vegetarian in Soweto haha) so we were able to bond over that as well. Thanks Dumi and thanks to the other gracious and professional staff with the company and running the coffee shop (great coffee!). And a special thanks to the people of Soweto for their patience in watching two white folks ride bike around the neighbourhood just to watch them live and go about their day. Great people, great experience. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And good luck to you, Dumisani, in all your future business ownership dreams. An absolute honour to meet you.

It was really a cool tour and together with Dumi my tour guide I had a good time riding through Soweto. He has a good knowledge about the area.
I saw some insights in the history of the are and could try some local specialities like beer and Kuta.

Dibujó is an amazing and professional guide. We visited Soweto, Nelson Mandelas home, a brewery and more. Really experienced the food, culture and history of this area.

Absolutely amazing! The tour is really well organized, giving us time to rest and grab refreshments along the way. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

It was a super great day in Soweto, our guide was super likeable and not only presented dry years and information stupidly, but also told really cool stories. We also felt really safe. I can definitely recommend the tour!

We did the walking tour in Soweto as a group of three German friends and united with other participants from all over the world. The group size was 6 in our case.
Our guide Tebogo was great, he had a huge knowledge about African history and brought us to so many interesting places. We learned a lot and had so much fun. It was so good to get to know the real life, we even had a traditional dish, which was super delicious.
The meeting point, where the tour started, is good to reach with uber, in my case, I stayed in the Rosebank district of Jo’burg and the Über needed around 30 minutes to bring us there.
I would definitely recommend that tour and you will also get the chance to buy some beautiful handcrafts from local people if you want to 🙂

I spent a fulfilling and authentic afternoon touring Soweto. Learning the moving history from the museum, to the residences, to the shanty towns. Feeling the vibes from the lively Vilakazi street. Stepping into the home where the mindset of a leader was grown, Mandela house. Tasting local cuisine at chef pozi, seeing the famed cooling towers, and taking so many lovely pictures. I was so lucky to be solo with my tour guide Dumisane. He was so informative and intelligent and kind, warm, helpful, patient. I feel so fortunate to have gone on this bicycle tour. At the start and end of my tour I also met his brother Dibujo who owns the tour company and he was very welcoming, kind, helpful and informative as well. The bikes were good, lightweight, sturdy. This whole experience was a highlight of my time in Johannesburg. Soweto is at the heart of the South African history and culture. I love the people and feel compelled to share my experience and want to return one day to help the people develop their housing and get better education and opportunities. They are so deserving and beautiful soulful people.

The guide was great! Verry good Englisch. Good storry telling. Hé was perfect!
The bikes where verry poor and i had to brake of the tour. Not only about the bikes were bad, but a was stick. The bikes must have gears.

It’s the best way other than driving around to see Soweto. The guide Dumi (abbreviated) was just amazing. He was patient, polite and knowledgeable. Only complaint I had was the traffic and no bike lanes so this was sometimes scary. Overall a unique experience.

  13. Olalekan_A

Yes I had a good time on the tour.
My Bike tour guide was Dumi, and he did a great job!
Lunch was “Kota” and it was fulfilled, no lies.
    I recommend this tour.

Our guide was Dumisane. He is a top guide and very engaging. He tailored the tour to our needs. We were not interested in going through museums and wanted to see more of life in Soweto, which he showed us. The photos may not be in order, but the bikes are stored in a shipping container and single speed. My bike was in good order and did come with a helmet. We went to many different areas of Soweto, including Orlando Towers and a shantytown (which was a humbling experience). I would definitely recommend this tour over one stuck in a van or taxi. I would also recommend asking for Dumisane as a guide.

What a great way to experience Soweto. Our tour guides were patient and knowledgeable. I just wish the ticket price was inclusive of all of the costs (e.g. beer tasting and Nelson and Winnie Mandela’s home).
