This was a great tour! After a lot of research, I specifically chose this tour becuase it went to a few places others didn’t, such as the Glenfinnan viaduct Culloden Battlefield, and the Highland Folk Museum. I feel like I got to see so much of the highlands in a short amount of time!
Our guide Steve incorporated music into the bus ride and shared a lot of history as we drove to keep it interesting. He found short walks for us each day, so we could stretch our legs and see beautiful waterfalls and other sites that were a bit off the beaten path. His recommendations for food at the lunch spots were also excellent!

The trip was great, the scenery was beautiful, and Jim was an excellent driver and an outstanding tour guide.

If you do your research and have realistic expectations and understand its a long 3 days, you couldn’t give anything but a 5* review with Rose as your guide. What an extraordinary human who is doing something she is passionate about and wanting to share her knowledge with visitors. The history she knows is second to none as a qualified story teller, this company is lucky to employ her and we were blessed to have her as our guide. Went out of her way constantly to make sure we had the best experience ever. Would def book another tour and be a 100% bonus if Rose was the tour guide. Thankyou lovely lady for a wonderful 3 days! I learnt way more than I ever imagined. ❤️

PROS:
You meet and friend people from all over the world. Jim, the “golden voice of the Glenn,” was a great guide and storyteller.
CONS:
1) The tour does not stop at all of the listed stops by the company in the itinerary. Some are marked on the itinerary, others are not. So, it’s a bit misleading and, at times, disappointing.
2) The bus broke down and we lost a day of the tour (in Skye) that we did not get back, hence the one star, which is well- deserved after how the tour company POORLY handled the awful situation. The 28 of us traveled from all parts of the world and may never be back again to Scotland so this was our only opportunity. In the end, they (the tour company owner Andy Barton) decided to reimbursed the 28 of us only 35% when we thought this was not enough compensation after all that we went thorough on day two. At a minimum, the Hairy Coo should had also given us a free tour ticket with no expiration date.
3) The group was waiting 30 minutes or longer for the bus to appear on the 1st day. We also left 30 minutes late on the 3rd day.
4) Bottom line, don’t take a Hairy Coo Tour. There are many other for companies in Scotland. that are more reliable, responsive and responsible.

What a disaster on the 3-day Isle of Skye Inverness Highlands and Glenfinnan Viaduct Tour from Edinburgh with the Hairy Coo Tour Company. Here’s a recap.
DAY 1:
The bus showed up late 15 minutes late after we were told to arrive 15 minutes early and not to be late. So the entire group was waiting 30 minutes or longer for the bus to appear and watching other buses arrive on time and depart.
DAY 2:
The driver/tour guide had to stop for two containers of oil at 9:30am in Loch Carron. An extra stop and lost time. At 12:30pm, the driver/guide had to stop again, this time for a compressor repair in Portree. We were told to return in 45 minutes.
At 1:15pm, we were told to return at 4:15pm because a super mechanic had to be called in. Also, the remaining tour sites for the day were now cancelled. We were to return directly to Inverness.
At 3pm, we learned the bus was not repairable today. There was a cracked pipe and a major oil leak. We were told a new bus would retrieve us. Plan A was a bus from Inverness. Plan B was a bus from Edinburgh. New time to leave Portree was now 7 to 7:30pm … then the time moved 8pm to 8:45 to finally 8:15pm.
So how did we spend our day? First, this 2nd day was the highlight of the tour. Why we were all on it!!! But we basically sat around waiting all day … a day we were to be visiting sites in the Highlands and a day we cannot get back nor had the opportunity to return to see the Highlands on this trip … waiting for updates and waiting for a rescue bus. SUCH A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!
The new bus with a new driver arrived in a Timberbush Tour Company bus, not a Hairy Coo bus. The new elderly driver said he received a call at 5pm (almost 4 1/2 hours after the bus first broke down) to pick us up. It was now 8:15 in the evening. The new driver did not know how to use the bus microphone, so we couldn’t hear him but we also did not understand his English. He kept crossing the median line on the road (we are all nervous about his driving and do not feel safe 🙏🏻) and when he stopped for the only bathroom break, he stopped and parked literary in the middle of the road. The new driver was also very rude, snapping at people and waving his finger at us. He was very stressed out and not obviously not comfortable driving a bus at night. We were all fearful we would crash with his recklessness.
We finally arrived in Inverness at 11:45pm.
Note: Several of us reached out to the Hairy Coo Tour Company. Not one apology. Not one email explaining and updating the situation on day 2. One person who called the company customer service and she was hung up on as soon as she got through. I also called and was rushed off the phone with no apology or compassion for our situation.
DAY 3:
The tour was scheduled to start at 8:30am but it instead started at 9:00am in a new third bus.
The air condition did not work, so we were all sweating, and the USB chargers were also not working. We had hope to see missed sites from day 2, but were told we had to keep to day 3’s schedule, which turned out not to be very exciting sites as Skye would had been 🙁 It was a day of seeing uneventful places.
NEVER AGAIN. It was unfortunate situation that was handled very poorly by the tour company, not the guide. Perhaps investing in a mechanic who checks all buses before they first depart would be a smart move. I will be advising friends and family traveling to Scotland to NOT take a Hairy Coo tour.

I had SUCH a wonderful time on this tour! My friend and I wanted to see both the isle of skye and the battlefield of Culloden, and this was the only 3 day tour that hit both of those. We are so happy we chose Hairy Coo. Ryan was an incredibly fun tour guide, and we saw so many places in such a short period of time. Next time im in the area, I’ll be sure to book another Hairy Coo tour.

Rose, our driver is a National Scottish Storyteller and her stories of Scottish history, Scottish and Celtic folklore as well as music brought this tour to life! We have gained a true appreciation of the sites of the highlands and the Isle of Skye and the history of Scotland.

Our guide Ryan was excellent in his knowledge n his energy was too good throughout the tour.
Reyu_c –
The trip was well planned and executed. Our tour guide cum driver Brian was excellent. He shared so many stories of Scottish history with passion. Most of the touristy attractions in Scotland are covered in this trip so please expect a lot of traveling.
YuenMan_L –
We loved our tour guide, Steve, who was wonderful, humorous and helpful! We liked his song lists too! This tour was definitely value for money! We could see the best and most stunning sceneries and historical sites of Scotland. We would like to join The Hairy Coo’s tours again in the future!

Whoever wants to visit the Scottish Highlands must do this tour. Great iterinary and entertaining guide (William) When I have the chance, I will do the same tour again on a different season.
nunoveigas –
Entertaining guide, beautiful landscapes, but the tour is too ambitious in terms of distance covered, with too long distances by bus each day through mountain roads, which make the ride unpleasant after a while.
Terry_B –
It was wonderful. The scenery was beauriful and it was well-organized. Ryan was upbeat and did an excellent job giving historical background of the visited sights. Highly recommend!
Susan_R –
Our guide Colin was awesome! Very engaging and informative, he made the journey a lot of fun. The scenery in the highlands is just beautiful. Lots of stops along the way gave us plenty of time to take pictures. Colin did a great job narrating the trip and providing the history of the locations we visited and of Scotland. Book the trip, you will not be sorry!
Tara_W –
This tour was a great opportunity to see a large variety of sights in the highlands with minimal personal effort. Our guide, Ryan, had a lot of great stories on history and modern culture, along with great music played while driving from sight to sight. The highlands are far from Edinburgh, so there is a decent amount of time spent on the bus, but the tour keeps in entertaining and stress free since you’re not navigating a rented vehicle. The itinerary allowed a lot of mingling among the 30-person tour and making of new friends. The whole trip is well planned and enjoyable. Personally, I would gave liked more time enjoying vistas and the waterfall hikes and would take a hiking-focused tour if they ever go that direction in the future.
Paige_M –
LOVED THIS TOUR! My husband and I both agreed we could have gone home after this tour because we felt so fulfilled! John- King of the North is an amazing tour guide, true patriot to his beloved Scotland, historian and epic story teller!
Kim_H –
The whole tour was amazing. The Hairy Coo took us to many interesting sites, and he shared many stories and history associated with sites. Best locations were all sites on the Isle of Skye, Battle of Culloden site and Whiskey tasting. Our guide Michael did a super job of driving us safely every day, and proving lots of options of interest for each site. Best guide ever and thank you.
Anju_B –
Scotland is exceptionally beautiful. We really enjoyed the tour and it is the most convenient way to travel into the interiors of Scotland.
William, our tour guide made the trip extra special. He kept us in fits & his stories made Scotland come alive for us.
Highly recommend the Scotland tour with Hairy Coo.
JaeYong_C –
This tour exceeded our high expectations. There were countless breathtaking views that would have been difficult for us to reach ourselves and the rich storytelling from our lovely guide Colin truly brought the landscape to life.
Michael_T –
Hairy Coo was a blast with our guide Stephen. Three days of adventure and laughs. The history and storytelling added to the sights and sounds of Scotland.
Monica_H –
I can’t recommend this tour enough! John, King of the North, was an amazing guide! You see so much of Scotland during the 3 day tour. The tour is organized, on time and John is so funny, knowledgeable and passionate about his country. A must do if you have the time!
