This was a remarkable experience and I highly recommend it. The educational experience of learning about the history and meaning of the tea ceremony, coupled with the kimono experience was a highlight of our day.
Anastasia_P –
It was a really beautiful and special experience.
After we dressed in kimono we had time to take pictures in the beautiful garden.
After that we had the tea ceremony that was wonderful.
I recommend this place!

This was a lovely experimence. The ladies who helped me dress in kimono were very kind and helpful. The lady conducting the tea ceremony was knowledgeable and explained the history and importance of the tea ceremony. A very calm and interesting time.

Wow absolutely beautiful! We were lucky to be a guest this stunning Japanese tea ceremony in KYOTO! We learnt about creating the bond between the host and guest and learnt to use our senses to also gain inner peace. I’m so grateful we got to apart of this beautiful ceremony on this trip! Definitely recommend for anyone traveling to Kyoto! The ladies were so friendly and welcoming! I had my hair done up beautifully and dressed traditionally by them! We learnt so much about the tradition

The traditional tea ceremony experience is a must when visiting Japan! When you arrive, men and women are separated to get dressed in kimonos to the ceremony. The women in the ladies’ room are lovely. They guide you every step of the way (e.g. putting the kimono on, doing your hair, etc.) to make sure you are ready for the ceremony. Once you are in the room where the ceremony is held, there is a lead to explain the process of a traditional tea ceremony and some extra information about Japanese culture. Then you get to make your own matcha tea with cookies. You can take photos throughout the experience and after. My partner and I loved the experience. We recommend this to anyone who is interested in an immersive Japanese experience.

I had a wonderful experience here. We got dressed in our kimonos first and there were plenty of ladies there to set up our hairstyles and then dress us. I am a larger person and I had a beautiful selection of kimonos to choose from.
The tea ceremony had about 12 people. The area was air conditioned and very authentic looking. Our presenter gave us a verbal history of the tea ceremony and why actions are done in certain ways. We were then able to take photos in the beautiful Japanese looking garden. It was a great way to relax and calm down from a morning of busy site seeing.
I highly recommend this if you want to dress up in kimonos and be in a comfortable setting away from the crowded tourist areas.

The tea ceremony and kimono-wearing experience were absolutely fantastic! The people guiding us through this cultural journey were incredibly knowledgeable and made us feel like we were part of something truly special. The place was clean, we were not rushed at all.
Putting on the kimono was a work of art itself, and they took the time to help us get it just right, ensuring we looked our best. They even did our hair to complement the kimono, making us feel incredibly beautiful and authentic.
Overall, this experience was not just about the tea ceremony and wearing a kimono; it was a step into the heart of Japanese culture, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an immersive and enriching cultural experience.

Danielle_K –
We loved our experience. The staff was very kind, very informative, and the matcha was delicious. Recommend to anyone traveling to Kyoto.
Michelle_T –
Authentic, expect for the kimono dressing, but was fun to wear.
Loved ceremony and had a lot of fun!
Grace_P –
Very informative, delicious and got to take great pictures
The address directs you to a studio on google maps…look across the small street and go up to the 2nd floor of that building
And it was a bit crowded when we went and noisy during the ceremony as others waiting didn’t know to be quiet
Heidi_C –
Amazing traditional experience with explanations of items, procedures and history. Maikoya is a well organised business. My daughters and I enjoyed the kimono experience. Hosts made us feel calm and comfortable in a traditional tea house and garden. They even offered my youngest daughter an alternative drink if she was worried about the bitterness of the tea. Highly recommended

Great time learning about the interesting history of Japanese tea in an intimate setting. Really fun and informative, and tasty! Would recommend to anybody visiting Kyoto for a fascinating cultural experience.
Ben_C –
The staff were very professional and courteous. The kimonos were great and the ceremony was just incredible. Thanks so much
Beverley_M –
This was such a great experience. We all enjoyed (even the boys) dressing up in kimonos, and the ceremony itself was perfect.
Lisa_B –
I was looking forward to an intimate tea ceremony, and while I didn’t expect it to last the traditional four hours, I had hoped for more than 25 minutes. It all seemed rather rushed to be ready for the next group, the opposite of how a tea ceremony is meant to be.
The dressing up was fun, and the ladies did a great job fitting us into our robes.
Kira_P –
This was a very nice, informative, and unique experience.
Started off signing in, women are directed across the street, while men wait a little bit as it takes the women longer to get ready. As I am a woman, I headed over wear I was handed a bag for my things and clothes. In the changing room you’re given an undergarment to wear under the Kimono. You choose the kimono you want and depending on the way things go you either get the Kimono on first or your hair quickly done, choice of a couple hair accessories as well. The ladies work really fast to get you dressed up and ready to go, so if you are looking for a more relaxed pampered experience this might not be right for you.
I was happy with the quick pace. Once finished we headed back and got to take pictures in part of the garden while we waited for the ceremony to begin. Once prepared we learned the history and custom of the Tea Ceremony. We also got to mix our own tea. No worries about not getting a photo, as it is offered to take pictures so you can remember the experience. Afterwards you get another garden pictures opportunity before going back to get changed again.
Again things do move quickly here, but the staff is completely friendly and helpful. I had a nice time.

A wonderful and peaceful introduction to the art of Japanese tea ceremony, in a lovely traditional house with a garden for photos. Really made me interested in learning more about this beautiful ritual. Dressing up in kimono was also so fun and truly a memorable experience.

This tea ceremony experience was worth the cost. The leader was a charming and well informed tea master. We were outfitted in Kimono with appropriate hair styles and decoration. It was a bit of a mill with many groups running simultaneously. The operation was attentive to mobility issues and had stools for those unable to be on our knees. Getting there was a bit of a trial by fire but the servers at the site helped us return by cab to our hotel.
