Despite the rain, we had an exciting evening. The two guides guided the group purposefully through the area and so we saw many birds, reptiles, gloworms and fish, apart from kiwis. But you should be aware that this is not a walk of joy. Sturdy shoes, at least trainers and clothing appropriate to the weather must be provided. The kiwis were hiding that evening, we heard them but saw none. Of course, this cannot be guaranteed. And it shouldn’t be a criticism either. Even without it, the Zealandia is highly recommended for nature lovers both during the day and at night.

The tour is also suitable for inexperienced people, provided that you can walk for 3 hours. We saw a lot of birds, including the rare takahe and two kiwis. Glowworms, wetas, and an enormous number of rare bridge lizards (Tuataras) were also seen. Very competent guide. Even if it is relatively expensive, it was 100 percent worth it.

We had an amazing experience. First time walking through the bush with an infrared torch let alone in a wildlife sanctuary. Unfortunately we weren’t lucky enough to spot a kiwi but we heard them calling nearby. We did see very active tuatara, including one that walked right past us on the path and so many glow worms all through the bush. The night calls were also lovely to listen to.
