We were lucky enough to book at visit to the Tamanoi stable on the last day of our trip, which was also the day before the May tournaments started. All the major wrestlers were there, including the highest ranked maegashira, an impressive Mongolian named Azumaryu (back home a few days later, we saw him compete on the NHK broadcast of the tournament!).
Our guide Utako could not have been more accommodating and helpful. The night before our early morning visit, she dropped off a note at our hotel confirming the pickup time — and enclosing a lovely origami crane. In the morning she escorted us to the stable, and on the way briefed us about the wrestlers we would see and other interesting facts. We were quite lucky to be the only two observers there, and the staff were kind enough to allow us to sit in low chairs.
For the next two hours we sat quietly as the wrestlers practiced their moves, stretched, and did other exercises. We were allowed to take photos but no videos. There is no talking either — this is an intense experience that requires respectful silence. Once you enter it is rude to leave. I would not recommend it for children or anyone who has trouble sitting still.
At the end of the session, the wrestlers celebrated with a plate of fried squid and a big bottle of sake, which they kindly shared with us. We also got an opportunity to take a photo with a few of the more junior athletes.
Afterwards, Utako escorted us back home, stopping along the way at a beautiful shrine which we probably would have missed. She was also ready with recommendations for other activities, which we could not take advantage of since we were leaving.
All in all, it was a very special experience that we’ll always remember.
I highly recommend Utako as a guide — five stars!

This is a once in a lifetime experience and one of the highlights of this trip!
Our guide was excellent and explained everything to us before we arrived at the wrestling stable.

Really interesting seeing them train. The guide was very knowledgeable and explained the sport to us before we saw the sumo’s.

Enjoyed the practice. It was amazing to see close up the hard work and dedication the wrestlers have to have. Hiro was a great guide getting us there and giving us a tour along the way too!

A very insightful experience into the commitment and determination of the Sumo fighters to hone their skills, and at the same time live the values of the Sumo tradition. This is an opportunity not to be missed when visiting Tokyo.

The power, dedication and shear physicality of sumo was put on full display at the practice we attended. Our guide, Toru Higaki, gave good insight as to what was happening during the practice, who was who at the stable and was an excellent resource for cultural nuance. The meet and greet with the wrestlers after the practice was unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable.

Thank you Mr. Maruyama for a very wonderful sumo tour. We were well taken care of through the maze of trains to the sumo stables. The sumo wrestlers were awesome and powerful as seen on TV but even more up close watching them in person. Though big and strong they were friendly giants and took pictures with us after the grueling practice.
    mahalo to all !!

Take was a wonderful guide. He contacted us the night before and answered our many questions carefully in good English. He was fun to hang out with and got us situated to our next destination after the sumos. Well worth the additional money not to have to figure out how to meet a group the morning after we arrived from US.
Watching the wrestlers practice was interesting and enlightening.

Great experience watching real Sumo wrestlers train. These guys are built like a Mack truck.- tremendous strength and they really sweat it out. 2 hours literally flew by. Our guides – Tomaka san and Tadashi san were superb. Answered and explained several questions, even if trivial. Very polite, punctual and respectful of course. Photo op with the wrestlers at the end was the highlight.
