What to Expect
You will start your day by boarding a luxury catamaran from Cairns and sailing to two spectacular outer reef locations, where you will enjoy exclusive access to an activity platform. There, you will receive personalized training in marine conservation and learn how to participate in real-world science. You will also get to snorkel in some of the most pristine and diverse areas of the reef, where you will see amazing sights and encounter fascinating creatures.
You will also get to take part in exciting projects such as:
Completing sightings network submissions and rapid monitoring survey reports for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. These are important tools to collect and share data on the reef’s biodiversity and health, as well as to report any unusual or significant events, such as coral bleaching, disease outbreaks, or marine animal strandings.
Assisting the master reef guides as they survey reef locations and monitor reef health. These are highly trained and certified professionals who have extensive knowledge and experience in reef ecology and management. They will teach you how to identify different types of corals, fish, and other marine organisms, as well as how to assess their condition and abundance.
Monitoring coral planting as part of the Coral Nurture Program, supervised by the University of Technology Sydney. You will learn how to measure and record the growth and survival of the planted corals, as well as how to care for them.
