By the time we were off the ferry there was only 43 minutes to hear the ranger presentation and look around. Then it was time to board the ferry for the return trip. My husband and I needed more time to look around we enjoy history and spent time reading the information given. I am glad we went but was disappointed at the time allowed to enjoy this historic sight.

I thought the historian on the island was great! He was very knowledgeable.
I do think the historian should not have said his relatives were “benevolent” slave owners. I don’t think he should have said the at; even though he was only talking to 3 of us. He said that the slave they owned took their last names because they were so good to them. I think all slaves were given their master’s last names. He’d just told one of the people that they should watch how they say things. I don’t know how he can say for sure his ancestors were “benevolent.”

The boat trip was pleasant. I was surprised how little fort Sumter has to do now with the original look and buildings. The museum was nice but a lot of text to read (no video content) for a short time. I couldn’t even get to the gift shop. You have around 40 min in the fort. It’s a nice experience but if you don’t have time for everything and need to prioritize – maybe it’ll be better to go to some of the museums and plantations.
