Lisbon is a beautiful city with plenty to see and do, even if you only have 2 days to explore. Here are some suggestions for the best things to see:
Day 1:
Start the day by visiting the iconic Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. These UNESCO World Heritage sites are some of the most important landmarks in Lisbon, with impressive architecture and fascinating history.
Head to the nearby Pasteis de Belém bakery to try the famous Portuguese custard tarts, or “pastel de nata”.
Take the tram 28 through the picturesque neighborhoods of Alfama and Graça, with their narrow streets, colorful houses, and stunning views of the city.
Visit the Castelo de São Jorge for panoramic views of the city and a glimpse into Lisbon’s medieval history.
End the day with a sunset drink at the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, one of the highest points in the city, with breathtaking views of Lisbon’s skyline.
Day 2:
Start the day in the historic Baixa district, with its grand squares, elegant buildings, and bustling streets. Visit the Praça do Comércio, Rossio Square, and the Elevador de Santa Justa.
Take the metro to the Parque das Nações, a modern area of Lisbon built for the 1998 World Expo. Here, you can visit the Oceanário de Lisboa, one of the largest aquariums in Europe, and stroll along the riverfront promenade.
Return to the city center to visit the Bairro Alto and Chiado neighborhoods, known for their trendy shops, lively bars, and cozy cafes. Take a break at the famous A Brasileira café, where Fernando Pessoa, one of Portugal’s greatest writers, used to hang out.
End the day by experiencing Fado, the traditional Portuguese music, in one of the city’s many Fado houses.
As for transport, Lisbon has a good public transport system that includes buses, trams, metro, and trains. The Viva Viagem card can be used on all modes of transport and can be purchased at metro stations and other sales points. Tram 28 is a popular way to see the city, but can get crowded and there are pickpockets, so be careful. Taxis are also readily available and relatively affordable. Finally, Lisbon is a very walkable city, so make sure to bring comfortable shoes and explore on foot as well.
