We were looking forward to our Private Kinabalu Park and Canopy tour with a ‘guide driver’ and a tour in English. All these things turned out to be wrong. As others have mentioned, the driver spoke hardly any English and actually told us the he was ‘just a driver’ and that he ‘couldn’t understand my English’! This lead to a very awkward journey in silence with no information about Kinabalu or the activities. Furthermore, when we got to the Canopy, the driver just went to the counter and got our ticket and then pointed upwards and said ‘walk!’ Whilst the weather was not the operator’s fault, you should also be aware that if it is cloudy (as it was for us), there is no view of Kinabalu mountain all day – I’m not sure how often this happens. As a result, when we got to Kinabalu Park (which we understood to be the main point of the tour), there was no viewpoint and the staff waived the entrance fee included in the price of our ticket as a result. The ‘driver guide’ literally drove into the park and said ‘there is nothing to see here, shall we go’. Undetered, we said we would visit the Botanical Gardens and walk a trail and asked for recommendations from the driver guide – he simply replied ‘just go here and walk and left us at Park HQ. We also had to pay the entrance fee to the Botanical Garden which was meant to be included in the price and when we told the driver, he just said that he didn’t realise and took a picture of our ticket to show his boss. Overall, the tour was 10 hours with over 6 hours driving and all we saw was a few trees from the Canopy walk. We felt this was a waste of a day’s holiday and wish we had been better informed before we signed up. We also note that other tours offer even more activities including g hot springs and Desa farm – the tours itself is mainly driving and very rushed so do consider this before signing up to much more. I’ve emailed Viator – this tour should be called ‘Transport and Entrance to Kinabalu Park and Canopy Walk’ – it is nothing more than this and the price should reflect that!
