We had a great time on this tour! We saw 4 of the 5 animals we were looking for. Southern Right whales were sighted 4 minutes into the boat ride! We also saw brown whaler (sp?) Sharks, Cape fur seals, and African penguins! The boat ride was well managed with the staff checking periodically to make sure everyone was okay. Great explanations of the wildlife were given and they made sure everyone had photo opportunities.

It was a great adventure! We saw wild sea animals with own eyes. Many thanks to the nice driver Rheyaan who kept us great comany during the drive, was super friendly and told a lot of interesting stuff about the country.

Excellent tour and a breathtaking experience. We were able to get up close to several whales, seals and sharks. Highly recommended

Wonderful trip saw ostrich on the beach. An added bonus. The penguins in the water were quite a site. Disappointed the penguin sanctuary was closed

I’ll start with the good part: The crew and especially the marine biologist are very kind and caring and do an amazing job explaining everything and making the trip as fun as it can be.
But, I think some crucial important relevant facts are missing in the description of the tour:
    * Great white sharks migrated from the tour area because of some orcas feeding on them, and were not seen in the tours since June 2022. There are some other sharks they try to show instead but seems that even with tghe shark cage tour trying to lure them – in our case we did not see even one shark so chances are not high of seeing a shark (especially compared to before that it was about 100% and you got refunds if you did not see a shark!)
    * Whale season is June – September. Out of whale season there are only “shy” byrde’s whales that can be seen in a rare ocassion. Again, we’ve seen none.
    * It is noted and you sign upon agreement that you might not see the big 5, which is fine. But it seems that the tour is not trying its best to really “catch” a sighting (compared to land safari big 5 for example) – they stop for 2-5 minutes to look for a dolphin/whale and continue on, the spotting is mostly opportunistuc – our dolphin sighting was lucky when we got back to the harbour, but otherwise it would be 2 of big 5 spotted.
So, to summarize, the “guaranteed” spotting is of cape fur seals and penguins which have colonies on (/near) dyer island where the 2.5-hour boat tour passes. That’s an impressing view especially of the seals (there are 50k+ seals there) but those animals are not “special” sighting in ny opinion and I think the boulders beach penguin colony is a better view of penguins for example.
I must say I came to the tour with hopes of seeing either a great white or a whale and I had no information regarding the low (or 0 chance in case of great white) of seeing them, so the low rating is mostly because of that dissappointment.
If you like open ocean boat tours, and a seal/penguin/dolphin enthusiast – thus tour might be just for you. If you are looking for whales/sharks – I think it’s important to note here that chances of seeing them are low off whale-season.

Seeing a massive pod of dolphins, African penguins and seals was a great experience. Enjoyed the trip very much. In particular the massive pod of dolphins was breathtaking. Thanks and we’ll have to come back to see the other two – whales and sharks.

Companies should give statistics to visitors about what and when they will see. We expected to see big 5, we saw small 2-penguins and seals. Very disappointed. People! Don’t do it in May!!!

  8. Louise_W

Seeing 4 whales. Amazing crew and knowledgeable biologist. We went with dyer cruises. 2 1/2 hours from Cape Town but worth the drive.

  9. Luke_J

Amazing experience great team who know their stuff. Would be good to have 2 visits to the sharks as we didnt see a Great White but we did see sharks, no dolphins either but still amazing day

It was a long drive to the site where we got on the boat and it was NOT narrated. I was expecting the driver to explain the towns we were passing by and share a little bit of the places history and that didn’t happen. The boat was fine and the marine biologist did a fantastic job. I saw southern right whales, sharks, and seals. I thought I had signed up for a tour tho and Wish that long car drive had been more informative. As an alternative I’d look into an Uber drive and just meeting up with the boat.

seeing the whales and penquins. Staff was great sharing information about the marine life and helped me get to areas on the boat to take great pictures

We had a great time. It was a super day and well organised. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. The driver that picked us up was very professional and helpful. The whole day was very relaxed and enjoyable., in fact it went so quick, wish it was longer. We did see all the marine life and more. Thank you guys for everything.

This was a fun way to spend a day. The boat scientist really knew what she was talking about and the sightings were great! Even the soup and bread after the boat were great. I’m glad I picked this tour because it was fun and contributes to a good outfit.

We really enjoyed our day with Dyer Island Cruises! The marine biologist and crew were very knowledgeable and we got to see 4 of the big 5 (no dolphins this time), which given it is late November, we were surprised to see whales (a mother and her calf) so late in the season. The drive to and from the Cape Town City Centre was about 2.5 hours each way but we got about 2.5 hours at sea, which was plenty of time to experience the animals and enjoy the ocean. The coffee and muffins in the morning were nice and the staff at Dyer was very polite and accommodating. Would recommend to anyone who wants to see the local ocean life and loves being at sea.

Perfect weather to do this tour but wrong season as we did not see any whale. Sharks we saw were fed thats why they surfaced. The seal colony was the only worthwhile viewing on this trip and glad that our guide stayed as long as we could. The penguin colony can be better viewed at Boulders Bay than where we were taken on this tour. The breakfast of tea and freshly baked cupcake before the tour and the piping hot soup with bread after the tour compensated for the lack of whale sighting. Also our tour guide suggested for us to see the cheetah preserve and our ability to pet a cheetah more than compensated for the lack of whale.

Incredible experience on board. Lived up to all expectations. Types of whales are seasonal but we did have several spottings of Bryede’s whales, thousands of fur seals, fewer penguins than expected and massive numbers of cormorants. Sharks were around a diving boat and plentiful. Not the time of year for great whites. We left from Cape Town, picked up by their excellent driver. We were picked up at 5:50 for a 9:00 sail that lasted to noon then returned by 3:30.

The Marine Big 5 Safari was a great experience. The staff members on board were extremely nice and respectful. They helped ensure that everyone had a positive experience. The boat ride is full of scenic views and you get really great shots of the animals. You will absolutely love seal island!

It is a must experience for all animals enthousiaste.
It is true that it takes about 2h from Cape Town to dyre Island. However ride itself is an attraction when driving through beautiful landscapes and sea towns.
Second, animals can’t be controlled and no sightseeings can be guaranteed. But that part of the adventure.
Everything was well organised and executed smoothly. Crew consisted of professional biologist and geography available for every question about the wildlife of that area.
It was truly an amazing day.

Excellent trip. Very well organised and the staff were incredibly helpful and well informed. We were able to see all 5 animals making it a great day.
