Kanazawa Japan Travel Information

Kanazawa, located in the Ishikawa Prefecture of Japan, is a city that is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It is often referred to as “Little Kyoto” because of its traditional architecture and preserved neighborhoods. I had the opportunity to visit Kanazawa during my trip to Japan and was completely mesmerized by its charm and elegance.

One of the first places I visited in Kanazawa was the Kenrokuen Garden, which is considered one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. The garden features stunning landscapes, seasonal flowers, and ponds with colorful koi fish. The garden also has a tea house where you can enjoy a cup of matcha tea while overlooking the peaceful surroundings.

Next, I visited the Kanazawa Castle, which was once the seat of the Maeda Clan. The castle is an impressive example of traditional Japanese architecture and offers breathtaking views of the city from its observation deck. Nearby is the Ishikawa-mon Gate, which is the only remaining original gate of the castle.

Another must-visit spot in Kanazawa is the Higashi Chaya District, a preserved neighborhood of traditional teahouses and geisha houses. The narrow streets, wooden buildings, and lantern-lit alleys create an enchanting atmosphere that transports you back in time. I also had the chance to participate in a tea ceremony, which was a unique and immersive cultural experience.

For art lovers, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a must-visit. The museum features an impressive collection of modern art from both Japanese and international artists, as well as interactive installations that are fun for all ages.

Kanazawa is also known for its food, especially its seafood. I visited the Omicho Market, a bustling seafood market with vendors selling a wide variety of fresh seafood, including sushi, sashimi, and sea urchin. I tried the famous Kanazawa-style sushi, which is made with vinegar-seasoned rice and fresh local seafood.

Overall, Kanazawa is a city that offers a perfect blend of tradition, culture, and modernity. It is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Japan and looking to immerse themselves in the country’s rich history and culture.
