Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the largest city in the state, located in the northern part of the state, near the Great Salt Lake. The city was established in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young. The pioneers were seeking a place to practice their religion freely and were led to the Salt Lake Valley by a vision of Young.
The Mormon pioneers quickly established a thriving community in the Salt Lake Valley, and the city grew rapidly in its early years. The pioneers built an extensive network of irrigation systems to cultivate the fertile land, and they established a number of important institutions, including the University of Deseret now the University of Utah), the Deseret News, and the Deseret Hospital.
