Having the tour guide sharing his lived experience, priceless. Memorable. The video on the boat was very educational.

Robben Island was interesting but I was not thrilled with this tour. The options were 7:00 a.m. start time for 8:00 ferry or 8:00 a.m. for 9:00 a.m. ferry. I chose the latter, but the driver texted us he would pick us up at 7:00 a.m. I told him I chose 8:00 a.m. and he said we had to get picked up at 7:00 a.m. to get there by 8:00. This is no what I signed up for but it was too close to the time so there was nothing we could do. We had to get up really early and miss breakfast. Once at the prison, the tour guide was nice but kept us sitting in a room in the prison for a long time with a rambling tour that did not make sense. Then we were rushed through the prison. It wasn’t even clear which cell was Mandela’s. The guide sent someone to rush back with me to show me. On the way back the bus wouldn’t start. It was OK as a short walk. All in all not terrible but I would have been better off going some other way.

First morning Tour started late, then we had to “run” along it, just to be on time to go back… no time for photos

Amazing, would fully recommend. Organisation etc was excellent but I would say if you can walk to the VA then tickets are available there too. The experience and the tour guides are fab.

  5. Tom_G

Very solemn and sad in parts to it. Unbelievable as to what the politic prisoner’s went through, but good insight nevertheless.

So much history! A must do! Nelson Mandela cell is unreal! Would recommend this tour to everyone who is interested in the history apartheid!

  7. Craig_W

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour, it was informative and heartbreaking to see the inhumane treatment of the Apartheid system. I have nothing but respect and admiration for all of the prisoners of this hellhole! The driver was punctual and professional and the boat ride was great.

It was great to be guided from ex-prisoner. To heat his experience, how was the daily live there. Xxx

  9. Karen_B

Worth visiting but not through viator. Although the service provided was good, it was overpriced by 2-3 times the local price

  10. Ana_V

The tour to Robben Island was great. However the only added benefit to book it through viator was the hotel pick up. Too expensive for that only benefit. Purchasing the tickets to the museum and ubering ourselves to the tour would have saved us usd 40

This was an amazing trip.. the guide on the bus explains things so well and gives a historical account of the island and its uses and inhabitants over the decades. The prison itself you are shown round by an ex inmate who gives a real insight into life as a political prisoner in those times. It’s quite harrowing to see how people were treated back then and we are fortunate that this is no longer allowed.

It was time well spent and moved along at a good pace. I was worried about it being too long but it was just right. The one first thing in the morning is best.

Robben island was very interesting , especially when speaking to an ex prisoner. I hadn’t realised that the majority of the tour was on a coach & if I had chance to re- visit I would book walking tour

  14. Rosemary_D

Not only was this tour very expensive, the guide at the Robben Island site hurried us along and did not wait for the second half of the large group to join him before describing each area. Consequently, we missed a number of the explanations. My husband and I have visited other well-known prisons such as Alcatraz, the one in Ushaia and the Kingston Federal Penitentiary and the tours conducted there were much better. (Please note that these comments do not reflect the situation with the very personable Viator representative who escorted us from our hotel to the ferry and back.)

Didn’t make tour, was in area with no cellular service or internet to contact the tour agency and cancel. Would like to thank the tour guide for all the attempts to contact me for the tour. Once i was in an area had got service, I see that he called 3 times and sent me several messages.

Loved the actual tour. Our guide of the prison was an actual prisoner for 20 yrs there. Only negative is the mandatory bus ride around the island overcrowded big buses no a/c and if your on the opposite side impossible to see the other side of what they stop to see.

The guides were interesting and knowledgeable. However I had trouble understanding the main guide. Surprised there is not more in posted info as in most museums. I watched Nelson Mandela movie in plane and related to the prison spaces I had visited.

  18. Thomas_J

Truly enjoyed hearing from the former political prisoner and seeing where Nelson Mandela was housed. A truly memorable experience.

  19. Kimberly_R

Really good tour. Well managed and split into groups of about 30 on the island. Having a former prisoner take us through was equally awesome and sad. I forgot to write down our guides name but his story was worth hearing.

  20. Robert_S

Interesting tour by former prisoner. The guide on the bus was probably very good but we could not understand her accent at all.
