Description

Lion’s Head Sunrise/Sunset Hike from Cape Town USD 83. We will be hiking up Lions Head, Cape Town’s most Instragram’able hike. We plan to either catch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean or sunrise from the Hottentots Holland mountains. We enjoy some amazing photo opportunities before our descent. During a sunset hike, we descend in the dark using our flashlights provided). During a sunrise hike, we may hike the first part in the dark using our flashlights provided).

While the hike is regarded as easier than Table Mountain, it still involves steep rocky and narrow terrain at certain points from about half up way and a section where the use of steel handles and chains need to be used to get up 2 pitches of about 3 meters each only up and not down). Quite adventurous indeed.

This hike has been an age old tradition for locals especially during the full moon and on clear/windless nights/mornings where the lights of the city below dazzle and the moon and stars show off its beauty in the night sky..

We hiked the mountain on Sunday, it was our first time hiking. We enjoyed ourselves very much. Tauriq was our guide, he is very skilled and helped us when needed. He also shared his knowledge on the mountain, hiking and Capetown.
Thanks Tauriq, if we ever come back then we will book another hiking tour with you.

Lion’s head sunset is a must see and indeed was an exemplary experience…. While you can still walk up and see the magnificent sunset anyway, please please use a guide to get the history, titbits and context to understand cape town. Tauriq was awesome…. Born and raised in cape town he opened our eyes to see as is the city he loves soo much.

While getting up at 3am to ensure we started this on site at 4am was tough, the view from the top as the sun rose over Cape Town was WELL WORTH the effort. Our guide was fantastic, knowledgeable and enjoyable to spend time with. I’d do this again in a heartbeat, what a way to start the day!

  6. Azhar_S

One of the best hike experience ever. Thanks to Tauriq (our guide) for this beautiful experience. The views from the top are amazing. We did a sunset hike.

  7. Juliana_O

Hike was great. Views were phenomenal. Expect to climb rocks and scale walls. It does require some prep before attempting.

  8. Rebecca_P

Tauriq was a great guide with lots of knowledge of SA and its history. Thoroughly recommend this trip.

We absolutely LOVED our hike up Lions Head and couldn’t have done it without our awesome guide Tariq. He was so knowledgeable and told us all about the history of Cape Town whilst climbing up. He knew all the best spots to take us and even gave us apples and cookies 😂 next time we’re in Cape Town we’re booking another hike with tariq for sure.

We did the sunset hike with Tariq in CPT and it was an absolutely amazing experience. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and it really reflects in how he handled the entire experience! He talks about the history of South Africa and his and his family’s experiences which is very informative. As an added bonus he also takes awesome pics 🙂 Def. recommend this experience!

I was a bit nervous planing to hike up at 4am in order to see the sunrise. But with the help of our guide, he made it very pleasant and came prepared. Along the way we stopped a couple of times and gave us a brief history lesson on Cape Town while we caught our breath. At the top he was also able to get the shots we wanted. Defiantly a must do while you’re in Cape Town

I spent 8 days in capetown. Experienced a lot of activities . But this one was the worst ever !!!
No organization at all. The guide wasn’t helpful ( Tauriq). I don’t recommend.

It’s an early morning… but oh so worth it! Terak was amazing! Beautiful views all the way from start to finish… I’m sore today. The hike does have ladders to climb which I could only do one as it was to high/scary for me… my adult kids did it and loved it!

Tauriq lead us on a sunset hike. He set a nice pace with plenty of stops for water and rest. I appreciated getting the broader information he offered about Cape Town in general and some of the impacts of apartheid. The scramble to the summit was so much fun and his spot to watch the sunset took us away from the crowds. It was a wonderful experience.

  16. Thomas_M

Tauriq paced our climb well – we never felt rushed. He helped a few people in our party get through some technical areas of the climb that they did not think they could do. The weather conspired to hide the sunset from us, but it was a refreshing, enjoyable hike all the same.

My wife and I did the Lion’s Head sunrise hike on our honeymoon in Cape Town. A perfect hike to schedule on our first day because of the time change!
The hike itself is pretty easy for the first 2/3 then a bit more challenging near the top (some rock scrambling and fairly steep). The views from the summit are very much worth the hike, though! The sunrise hike starts early (around 4:30 AM) and headlamps were provided.
Our guide was Tariq who was super friendly and extremely knowledgeable. He made the hike a lot of fun.
This is a must-do if you are a hiker visiting Cape Town.

Pretty much the best hike I’ve ever done. Tauriq was an incredible guide and I’m so glad we had him and our group for this journey. The staples/chains route was challenging with my fear of heights and Tauriq was patient and helpful the entire way. What a rewarding view at the end. Would definitely recommend this adventure!

  19. Peter_B

Really fun hike starting in the dark and seeing the sun come up. Amazing views of the coast, city and table mountain. And Tauriq was an excellent guide providing loads of interesting info throughout.

This excursion was well worth the wake up at 3:45 am. Tauriq picked us up as promised and we had a really nice walk up the hill. He was patient and helpful and we learnt a lot about South Africa and Cape Town on the way. At the top we were served delicious cookies baked by Tauriq’s wife. We warmly recommend this tour and Tauriq as a guide. This was a perfect start for our holidays! Thank you!
