After many days looking at the many unbelievable sights of Istanbul, I saw this tour advertised on Viator. This tour did not disappoint. It was led by a very knowledgeable Guide, who pumped us with facts about the history of Istanbul and after a coffee we were soon deep underground, discovering early Roman buildings. We would never of seen these buildings and their history without going on this tour, because of their surprising locations.
I would fully recommend this tour to those who want to fully immerse themselves in the fantastic City of Istanbul

I booked this tour as a chance to see something a bit different from the regular tourist destinations in Sultanahmet, and was not disappointed. My guide Ece was prompt in meeting me and very knowledgeable both about where to find bits and pieces of ancient Rome/Byzantine empire and explaining the history behind the sites. Many of the places we visited were simply in the basements of hotels or restaurants, not at all a part of the regular tourist foot traffic, so you don’t have to struggle through throngs of people to see things. I imagine the itinerary can only improve as more and more sites are found and excavated. Ece was also very accommodating in terms of tailoring the day and pace of things. I recommend this tour as an alternative to the monumental standards of the Haiga Sofia and Hippodrome, etc…. you get to go underground and have an up close understanding of just what they mean when they say successive layers of empires were built on top of one another.

Was told tour was 5 hours. It was 3. Was told will be picked up at hotel. Guide came in a cab and I was required to pay the fare to old city. Was told tour would be cancelled if not enough participants. I was the only one. Maybe that’s why they sent a guide that can barely speak English. I could only understand at best 10% of what he said.
Places we were trying to get access to were not accessible.
Incredible ripoff.
I have used Viator several times before, but this time I should receive a refund.

Ece was a fantastic tour guide. She picked my husband and me up at our hotel and we took public transportation to the old city where we explored modern hotels/shops with ancient ruins beneath their buildings. She was very knowledgeable about the history of Turkey, who conquered whom and when, etc.. She also shared some contemporary history about modern day Turkey, young people and their social norms and more . We did lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes and get a Turkish coffee at some point for more energy. Fun day!
