Description

Sainte-Chapelle is a stunning royal chapel located on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris. It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France, later Saint Louis, and constructed between 1241 and 1248 to house some of the most precious relics of the Passion of Christ, including the reputed Crown of Thorns and a fragment of the True Cross.

Architecturally, Sainte-Chapelle is a masterpiece of Rayonnant Gothic style, celebrated for its remarkable stained glass windows. The chapel is built on two levels: the upper chapel was reserved for the royal family and designed as a magnificent reliquary with towering stained glass walls depicting over 1,100 biblical scenes illustrating stories from the Old and New Testament; the lower chapel served the palace staff and features richly decorated columns and capitals with floral motifs.

The chapel was part of the medieval Palais de la Cité, the royal residence of the Kings of France, and served both religious and political purposes, symbolizing the divine authority of the monarchy. Despite damage during the French Revolution and subsequent repurposing, Sainte-Chapelle underwent major restorations in the 19th century to restore its original 13th-century appearance.

Today, Sainte-Chapelle stands as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture and stained glass artistry in the world. Its soaring windows create a radiant kaleidoscope of light, making it a must-visit historical and cultural landmark in Paris
