Description

The Conciergerie in Paris is a historic building located on the Île de la Cité, one of the small islands in the Seine River at the heart of Paris. Originally part of the Palais de la Cité, it was built starting in the 6th century and expanded in the 12th and 13th centuries. It served for centuries as the royal palace and the seat of French kings before gradually becoming a courthouse and prison.

Architecturally, the Conciergerie is a striking example of medieval Gothic secular architecture with soaring vaulted ceilings, large Gothic arches, and fortified towers, including the Caesar Tower, Silver Tower, and Bonbec Tower. It looks like a medieval fortress and its three towers with cone-shaped roofs remain unchanged since the 13th century.

The site is famously known as a prison during the French Revolution where thousands, including Queen Marie-Antoinette, were held before their executions by guillotine. Her cell, where she spent her last days, is open to visitors today. Other notable prisoners included revolutionary figures like Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre.

The Conciergerie is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval buildings. Visitors can explore the grand Hall of the Men-at-Arms, prison cells, and see medieval stained glass windows and exquisite stone carvings. The building also features the Tour de l’Horloge (Clock Tower), which houses Paris’s first public clock, dating to the 14th century.

Today, the Conciergerie stands as a powerful symbol of French history and Gothic architecture, offering a gripping insight into royal power and the turbulent times of the Revolution
