Wildlife in Atherton Tablelands Tropical North Queensland

The Atherton Tablelands is a popular destination for visitors to Tropical North Queensland. Located a short distance south of Cairns. Wild Life in the Atherton Tablelands

The Herbert River Possum is only found in the Atherton Tablelands. This black and white monotone marsupial makes his home in a tree hollow near the Herbert River in the western Atherton Tablelands. The Herbert River possum prefers to live in high altitudes.

Lumholtz’s tree kangaroos have adapted well to living in the wet rainforest of the Atherton Tablelands. They have a special shape in their fur which allows the water to quickly run off. Unlike the majority of kangaroos in Australia, the Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo has shorter hind legs and longer stronger forearms. An interesting fact is the tree kangaroo has the longest tail. The long tail is used for balance.

Suger Gliders and possums. We have all heard of sugar gliders but have you seen oneThere are more species of sugar gliders and possums in this area of Australia than anywhere else in the world. Also known as the flying squirrel described as a small possum with wings is capable to glide about 50 metres between trees. Best time to see these fascinating animals is at night.

The Northern Bettong Rat Kangaroo. This is another animal that is only found in this area. The best spotting location is in the Davies Creek National Park. Look around Mareeba and Ravenshoe for this charming little creature. It grows to about the size of a rabbit. Also a nocturnal animal best seen at night.
