When we arrived our names were marked off and we were given a set of rules to read prior to entry. Then told to line up. Watching the sumo wrestlers practicing and training was excellent and a privilege. What was disappointing is no information was provided on the history of the sport, the life of a sumo and the rules of the sport. We have no idea who was our guide. While people can do their own research, it would be better to have the information and perspective from those involved in the sport.

The experience was very authentic and educational but the area was very cramped, and hot. While we understand that the intent was to be as unobtrusive as possible, setting up chairs and fans would have made the whole hour much more comfortable.

An incredible experience! A highlight of the trip! My husband and I loved the Sumo practice. It was an intimate setting where we really got to see the intense training that these amazing athletes endure. We are eager to attend a tournament to watch this training in action. I would recommend this activity to anyone that visits Tokyo. We arrived about 30 minutes early and were the first there which enabled us to sit in the front row. It’s not stadium seating so I recommend arriving early as we did for the best view. The wrestlers took photos with us after as well. What a joy!

Very interesting to experience this piece of Japanese culture. Try to be 30 minutes earlier so you can sit front row.

Such an intimate view of sumo practice! Definitely worth doing it, especially if you aren’t visiting Japan during a sumo tournament.

This tour is an incredible opportunity to experience an event that is unique to Japan! It is a must see event! I would caution that it may not be suitable for young children and the viewing area is quite compact so arrive early.

It was amazing to observe the morning practice of young sumo wrestlers. It was authentic, they displayed incredible skill, it was also very interesting to observe the dynamics among them. This was the highlight of our visit, we loved it.
Kim_S –
Gave a great insight into how hard the training is and what they do. I had no idea how different it really is. Nice bunch of men who clearly like what they do and take it very seriously.
Michael_N –
Good experience to see. Would recommend to anyone who has any interest in sumos. Was amazing to watch these guys put everything they have into their practice.

The Sumo stable was difficult to find and we feared we would be too late – but it was fine.
Amazing to see the wrestlers warming up, then doing some light engagements before finally seeing a number of wrestles. There was an American guy who was learning. He was a bulky guy but clearly had a long way to go to match their strength- indeed he pulled a shoulder muscle.
We were able to take some photos at the end.

Beautiful experience watching the sumo wrestlers train in the morning. Well organised and well run. Higgly recommend this to anyone visiting Japan.
Just a point – a few members of the group were recording the wrestlers. The group leaders sit outside so they do not have oversight over this. This should be monitored more closesly as I can see how important this is to the wrestlers.

Amazing experience! We got to see sumo wrestles during their morning training. Such a unique experience. 100 percent recommended

It was very interesting to see the way that they train themselves for competition and the different physics and training methods that they use

We were expecting a bit more from this. It was 1 hour of stretching, maybe 30 minutes of contact practice, and 30 minutes for attendees to take a quick pic with the athletes. We were very squeezed into the space to watch.
Paul_F –
It felt genuine, especially watching the sumo banter back and forth and give each other advice. As a hockey player it was like being with the team and having a practice.
Donna_B –
We thoroughly enjoyed watching morning practice at a sumo stable in Tokyo while it was a large group it felt like we were watching practice as it usually is. We saw the warm up and stretches and moves before watching practice and then photos. The sumos joked and teased each other and supported younger less experienced ones.

Brilliant. Firstly, watch sanctuary on Netflix and then you have a good idea about what is happening. Secondly, get there early as you will sit at the front. Thirdly, be ready to sit cross legged or any position not pointing your feet forward for 2 hours and expect not to move. Fourthly, expect that this is not about you but about watching a practice by professional athletes and their training – it’s not entertainment. Our family including 2 teens loved this. Really interesting and mindful preparation ending with sparring or equivalent of. If you are interested in sumo then it is a must. Felt authentic and were privileged to watch it.
Deborah_G –
It was an interesting insight into Sumo Wrestling. I was surprised by the hard training they have to do and the fierceness of the initial impact when they wrestled. It can be uncomfortable to sit on the floor for 2 hours so be aware of this when booking.

We had a truly memorable Japan experience at the Sumo Morning Training Watch. Special thanks to Hiroko and True Japan Tours for their extra effort in arranging spaces for our group of four. As well, guide Ricko, who arranged transportation to and from the Watch was exceptionally helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.

The sumo stable’s coach sat directly in front of me, and completely obstructed my view for 95% of the practice (and I couldn’t sit elsewhere because there were no other spots). Do not get stuck sitting behind the coach’s ’sitting pillow’ like I did.
