We enjoyed our visit to Port Arthur Historic Site, which included a guided short walk and a short cruise. You could see most of what’s on offer in one full day or break it up over two days as we did. The Bronze ticket price (which is the cheapest available and what we bought through Viator) is available as a two day pass only. We had a lovely time there.

The Site itself is a must do experience and the initial walk through with the guide puts everything in place. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes but we decided to take the optional tour of the Isle of the Dead. The tour guide was most informative and some of the stories he told were enough to put a chill up your spine. Also they estimate that 1100 to 1200 people are buried on the island but they are not quite sure where they are all buried so it is most likely the path you take walks over some of the bodies that are buried there. I was waiting for a hand to come out of the ground and grab an ankle. It will take a couple of days to see all the out buildings, worth the effort. advertisements is under

Had the most amazing time here, there is definitely a “feeling’ ,we were really moved by all the different levels of history here not to mention the natural beauty.

  4. Sheree R

Walking tour very informative, had a great guide.
Cruise was ok but not necessary if you are short of time

A very interesting two days, Port Arthur is a fascinating place! We also took a JetBoat tour which was also very entertaining…

  6. AJ

Well worth the visit. Definitely need more than one day to see it all.

  7. Judith s

Very happy with the whole day. Really enjoyed the boat building and blacksmith area with sound effects. Loved the cruise but wished we had booked the the Isle of the Dead. The talk was informative and helped us navigate our way around. We will return again because of course we did not leave enough time.

If planning to spend one day there, the entry site pass provides you with a guided tour a must, free access to all on mainland and a guided boat tour of around the islands e.g. Isle of the dead. Could easily spend two days there one was all we had time for….a unique experience. The drive to Port Arthur was also full of breathtaking views if you take the few minutes to drive off the main roads for some truly breathtaking views.

Very interesting day. The guide for the tour was extremely good, with a mix of history and a little bit humour. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful, hard to imagine the severe hardship of convicts. Nice small cafe to sit and relax a while.

The problem was not the local provider nor the content. We could have taken the site tour for half this price had we directly purchased the tickets from the provider versus Viator.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed him. We learned a lot and really loved the boat tour that was part of it and time spent exploring on our own afterwards.

Worth every penny, I highly recommend visiting this beautiful precinct. We spent 6 hours at the site.

We had a fabulous sunny day exploring the Pt Arthur historic site. Our guide Rob was informative and entertaining. It’s a large area with much to see. Wear comfortable walking shoes and take a jacket and umbrella just in case.

The helpfulness of the Staff started are experience…love the way we could walk around at our own pace or join a walking tour if we wanted.

  16. ArjunSaran_D

Scenic views of Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsula but the guided tour was average given the strong winds because of which we couldn’t hear what the guide was saying.

  17. Rod_S

The sharing of the history. The beauty of the surroundings. I enjoyed the cruise, the displays and gardens.

  18. Mark_S

Amazing site with such history. Tour guides all great. Would recommend getting to as many of the free short talks as possible. Night tour also good, with or without dinner.

  19. ALAN_F

An enjoyable & immersive step back in time. Wonderfully preserved setting plus a very sombre memorial.

It was a bit disappointing that ghost tours were not running on the day we got there, as we didn’t see anywhere prior to our visit that advised days the tours were operating
