Overall, the wine tram was a great experience. We took the bus from Cape Town and were on the navy route so that we could have our lunch at Plaisir de Merle. You do need to think about where you’re going to eat – some places have full restaurants and others have nibblies. If you want a full service meal, you should pick accordingly.
So the wine. We skipped the first stop thinking that everyone would get off at the first one and if we went straight to the second one, we would have a private tasting – and we were right. This is definitely the kind of event that gets busier and messier as the day goes on as the tour lines start intersecting with one another. If I did it over, I would knock out as many as I could early on and then find one to sit at for the afternoon.
We went to Camberley, Bartinney, Plaisir and Boschendal. If I did it again, I would probably only go to Bartinney (which is lovely, with amazing wines). Camberley had great service but so-so wines. Lunch at Platform at Plaisir was really good – new restaurant space. When we got to the tasting, they gave us our first two tastes and then forgot about us. We had to chase the server down to give us our last tasting so we could make the tram. I had high hopes about Boschendal because I heard great things, but I have to give it a big zero. It was the last run of the day, and we were told on arrival that we needed to take a ten minute “tractor ride” (minibus) there and back – ok so we’re down to 40 minutes. Then we were told that all the seats outside were reserved, we couldn’t stand at the bar to do our tasting and we needed to go into their (very un-scenic) tasting room. The guy in the tasting room told us it was closed and we had to go back outside (we’re now down to 32 minutes). I finally had to be THAT person and told them that we were there from the wine tram on a timeline and they needed to figure their sh*t out. Honestly, if you’re too busy and big to do the wine tram, then don’t participate any longer. Anyway, we got seated with another couple who were in the same boat and we had to chug a lug our wines to finish the tasting before our tractor ride back to the tram. They were calling us to go before we even got to our last wine.
Part of the tour is on a bus and part on a tram. The tram is cute and old-timey, but super slow. The bus portion was way more expedient. The complementary wine you get on the tram is plonk.

Enjoyed all four wine farms we went to, wanted a relaxed day, so we did not rush to go to all the farms.

Looking forward to repeating it again 🙂

Very well organised, the trans and the buses were staffed by enthusiastic individuals who gave you information on the different vineyards and the time that you must be back on the tram

The visit to Lust and Vrede and Boschendal wine farms. You need to do it to understand; it is just perfect

Very informative and organised. Really a wonderful experience worth every cent. Lovely variety of wine estates with generous varied tastings. Will definitely recommend to locals and tourists.

What a fabulous way to explore the wine region of Franschoek. A comfortable coach takes you there from Cape Town in just under 1 hour and then you board an old fashioned tram or bus which takes you to several vineyards throughout the day. You can choose which ones you want to visit and the transportation is well organised. There are lots of options for wine tasting which are at your own expense
Carolyn_B –
This tour was good. It was lovely to see so many different vineyards with their varying landscapes. We loved the relaxed atmosphere of Boschendal especially and to be invited to put our feet to cool in the Solms Delta plunge trough as it was an exceptionally hot day. Rated only 4 star as the Wine Tram itself was not operating due to mechanical fault but the tram buses were good.
Sarah_N –
My friend and I had a marvelous time on the wine tram overall. However, we received conflicting information from the different tram guides and, as a result, visited one less vineyard than we were planning to. This was frustrating in the moment, but otherwise, we very much enjoyed ourselves.
Barbara_D –
I gave it 3 stars because the Tram was not working. The whole point of the excursion was the Tram. I think this should have been told to us at check-in and not once we arrived. They bussed us around which took time away from the tour. They were adamant that they were on a strict schedule but often very late to pick us up which meant that we lost time. It was whole day experience but with the Tram not working you can only do 3-4 wineries.
Simon_C –
We didn’t make it, ordered taxi in time from our location, due to load shedding the traffic lights weren’t working, causing traffic chaos so in short we couldn’t make our stop! Not their fault or responsibility
What is their responsibility is to be far more understanding and flexible, refusing to re-schedule is not acceptable
I am sure the tour is amazing, and this review is not to place a bad or negative review.
Dawn_M –
Fantastic day from start to end and the wines were great, the views were spectacular and the staff were very helpful, we couldn’t get a taxi so they gave us a ride to our hotel 👍

The tram was my best experience for this trip, what a great experience 🤩would definitely recommend people to do this
Dov_D –
Beautiful settings to enjoy the most wonderful wines. The trip was well organised, fun and engaging. It was so much fun to be on the tram and the wines were exceptional. Only thing I would recommend is it would be even better if there were less vineyard options so it’s not too rushed on each vineyard, we could have done with extra time on each vineyard as they were extremely special
Sindi_J –
