As our cruise ship was scheduled to dock in Penang for only a limited few hours, we decided to purchase tickets for the funicular here in the UK prior to our departure, as we had read of long queues. The price was the same as those shown on the Penang Hill website so we purchased the ‘fast track’ option and are so pleased we did as there were, indeed, quite long queues, even to purchase fast track tickets on the day. We did have to swap our Viator voucher for tickets, but we were ushered to a queue-free counter where the swap was done. We were then directed through a separate entrance and were boarded first on the very next train. There is no doubt that this saved us some considerable time which was so limited. Similarly, for the return journey we were directed into a separate entrance and had the benefit of being able to sit in a small, cool, lounge whilst waiting for the next train which, again, we boarded first.
The train journey itself is only 5-10 minutes and the views from the top of the hill were amazing. There is a restaurant and café at the top, the latter serving the most ornate ice cream/fruit dishes we have ever seen! As it was very hot we shared a short electric golf buggy ride around the top of the hill with another couple for a total of 10US, which was interesting and saved a long walk.
If your time in Penang is limited, I would recommend that you purchase these tickets on-line in advance as you will save a lot of time. We had also purchased hop-on-hop-off bus tickets the bus stops right outside the funicular station and wanted to see as much of Penang as we could in the time we had available.

If you are in Penang, a visit to Penang Hill should be on your agenda. An enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours and the views were very good. We purchased “Fast Lane” tickets and to be honest the day we visited they really weren’t necessary but I can imagine how beneficial they would be during busy times.

Amazing excursion. The restaurant at the very top has clean toilets for patrons and is a beautiful tranquil spot.

The experience is surreal, can easily spend 3-4hours exploring. It is definitely one worth doing. The people are super friendly

We bought fast lane ticket , that cut down lots of waiting time , as long long queue at normal lane . Too crowded during the festive days , lots of local tourists from other part of Malaysia and also from Singapore

There are buggy rides on the hill as you reach. The train that goes up and down are two different trains that works simultaneously. Can overnight on the hill to catch the sunrise view. Before entering the train, just as you queue there’s a choice for photography to be taken that can be purchased as you arrive at the hilltop

I wonder there is no package tickets including the Hill Top Habitat. We buy another ticket RM 40 per persoon to get there.
To pay more for Fast Lane is worth very busy even on Monday.

Best part was going up and down the hill on railway, nothing much to see or do at the top, sadly no view of Penang due to low cloud
Angelica_M –
The lines are insane! People waiting for over 2 hours to go up and again to go down. With this fast ticket we didn’t wait at all and we’re the first ones getting o the funicular so we also got the best places!

It was an informational and interesting trip to this historical place. It wasn’t stressful but relaxing.

If you are thinking of going up the Hill and are short of time would highly recommend buying ticket in advance. This skip the line queue saved us possibly over an hour of queues as we jumped straight to the front both on the way up and way down.
The views are spectacular, if you want to avoid the crowds head to the Cafe at the back of the Belleview Hotel. We sat and had a lovely drink (beer and fresh apple juice) in a lovely garden.
Definitely worth doing this trip .

The fast track saved so much time on both trips. Worth the money not to stand in the long line. Look for the monkeys when you exit the train. They will keep you entertained.

Try and pick a clear day! But great to book tickets in advance – VIP is worth it for weekends as queues can be long – great thing to do in Penang.

We had a great ride up on fast lane. Recommend this lane for everyone. Beautiful once we got to top. Be sure to allow time to walk around and enjoy the views. Also at bottom we had a refreshing A&WRootbeer in a mug. Quite a treat.

Easy to redeem. Highly recommended to buy the fast lane ticket during peak hours as it can be a difference of 1-2 hours or more waiting time in the queue.

The ride was interesting especially for my son who loves trains.
The part where it was steep was quite thrilling!

I purchased the Fast Lane tickets and it was worth it’s weight in gold. It didn’t even look like a busy day until I saw the line of people waiting for the funicular. I went right to the front and got to choose the best seat on the train — both ways. I’m so happy I purchased the tickets ahead of time.
